A Complete Seasonal Guide for Travelers

Tanzania is one of Africa’s most spectacular destinations, offering unforgettable wildlife safaris, pristine beaches, iconic mountains, and rich cultural experiences. Whether you’re dreaming of witnessing the Great Migration, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, or relaxing on Zanzibar’s white-sand beaches, choosing the right time to visit can make all the difference.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Tanzania?

The best time to visit Tanzania is generally during the dry season from June to October. During these months, wildlife viewing is at its peak, temperatures are pleasant, and roads and trails are in excellent condition.

However, Tanzania is a year-round destination, and the ideal travel period depends on your interests.

Best Months to Visit

June to October – Best Overall Experience

During these months, wildlife is easier to spot because animals gather around rivers and waterholes. The weather is sunny, pleasant, and ideal for safari adventures. This is also the peak season for witnessing the famous Great Migration river crossings in the northern Serengeti.

Short Rainy Season (November – December)

The short rains bring brief afternoon showers, but travel remains enjoyable. The landscape becomes greener, birdlife is abundant, and tourist numbers are lower compared to the dry season. Many travelers enjoy this period because accommodations may offer better rates.

Green Season (January – February)

This is one of Tanzania’s hidden gems for travelers. The weather is generally warm and dry between the rainy seasons. In the southern Serengeti, visitors can witness the calving season, when thousands of wildebeest give birth, attracting predators and creating dramatic wildlife encounters.

Long Rainy Season (March – May)

This is Tanzania’s wettest period, with heavier rainfall across much of the country. While some roads in remote safari areas may become difficult to access, travelers can enjoy lush landscapes, dramatic skies, and lower prices. This is considered the low season for tourism.

Quick Facts

  • Best for wildlife & migration: June – October
  • Best for value & fewer crowds: November – December
  • Best for calving season: January – February
  • Low season, lush scenery: March – May

We had a great time during our 5 Days safari trip in the Tarangire National Park, Serengeti and the Ngoro Ngoro. Our French speaking (very good) driver/guide Joramo was a very good driver, he was very helpfull and we enjoyed his presence. He did his utmost to find the animals and we were lucky to see 4 out of the Big Five. We made very good memories and we hope to come back one day. Joramo, thank you very much, we had amazing time together!

Absolutely 5 stars. I booked the 6-day Northern Tanzania safari and honestly didn’t know what to expect from a smaller local operator. Best decision I made. Our guide knew the Serengeti like the back of his hand he spotted a cheetah hunt from what felt like miles away before any of us even had our binoculars up. The lodge was comfortable, food was great, and the Ngorongoro Crater on day five was simply something I can’t put into words. Tropicquest didn’t just meet expectations, they raised the bar. Asante Sana.
